The inaugural CIBC Ambitions Index, released in April 2025, highlights resilience and optimism among Canadians in pursuing personal goals despite economic and geopolitical challenges. The report identifies health and wellness (57%), financial stability and growth (54%), and personal relationships (49%) as the top areas of ambition across age groups and regions. A majority (68%) of Canadians reported progress toward their goals in the past year, with only 6% feeling they regressed. Additionally, 75% expressed satisfaction with their achievements, and 61% remain optimistic about future progress. Carissa Lucreziano, CIBC’s vice-president of financial planning and advice, notes that ongoing uncertainty has not dampened Canadians’ determination to advance their ambitions, with 78% emphasizing increased importance of their goals amid adversity. The report underscores a cultural shift in defining wellness. While 91% of respondents consider work-life balance crucial for happiness, less than half (49%) prioritize career advancement. This reflects a growing emphasis on well-being over traditional professional success. Physical health is also a focal point, with 85% engaging in regular fitness activities, indicating a broader prioritization of holistic health as a core ambition rather than a fleeting trend. Despite generational differences, common themes emerge. Nurturing personal relationships ranks as the top ambition nationally and within every age group, emphasizing family and social connections as fundamental to personal fulfillment. Financial stability unites all demographics, though objectives vary: younger generations (Gen Z and Millennials) prioritize financial independence, while older groups (Gen X and Baby Boomers) focus on family financial security. This shared emphasis on economic resilience underscores a collective understanding of financial health as key to overall well-being. The Index reveals gaps in structured goal management. Only 35% of Canadians set goals quarterly, 40% review progress periodically, and 29% celebrate achievements regularly. CIBC links consistent goal-setting and milestone recognition to higher satisfaction and optimism, suggesting that improved practices could enhance success rates. Lucreziano encourages seeking professional advice to formalize plans, noting that those who adopt disciplined approaches are more likely to maintain momentum. Overall, the report portrays Canadians as pursuing a balance between pragmatic and meaningful ambitions, driven by adaptability and a focus on fulfillment.
